Third Party
Mods
Mods (modifications) that change the vanilla gameplay. They can include changing lighting or adding new items. Many mods are community-made and usually free online, but Mojang endorses a couple. On Java Edition, for the player to mod their own game, they have to add the mod files to their game folder and a mob launcher. All Minecraft (MC) editions can be moded, except consoles on the same level as a personal computer (PC) and mobile editions. Also, the mods listed below are some of the most popular today, and between 2011 and 2014, they were in nearly every modded MC playthrough. Also, if you'd like to download any of them, click the mod's name.
The Create mod
Known as Create on curseforge (or Forge), a mod launcher and one of the largest online collections of MC mods, next to Fabric. The mod was made by simibubi, and according to it's a page on curseforge that adds a slew of tools and blocks for building, decorating, and automation. With it, many different contraptions and animated components can work in tandem with each other in a nearly endless possible arrangement. Since its release in October 2019, it's been downloaded over 50 million times.
Chisel and Bits
Created by AlgorithmX2 Forge mod, which uses in-game materials to create endless custom decorations by sculpting, copying, sawing, rotating, measuring, and building, all at a 1/16th scale. Since its release in June 2016, it has accumulated over 100 million downloads.
Roughly Enough Items (REI)
Before vanilla MC had recipe books, mods like this one were very popular, but that's not to say that they aren't anymore after the addition. Quite the opposite, with around 24 million downloads on Forge and regular updates. This mod specifically added a list of recipes and an index of every block and item in MC to the right of the inventory; it can also customized. It was created by shedaniel.
Lucky Blocks
Although there are many copies of this extremely iconic mod, the original lucky block mod was created by Alex Socha in 2015 and, according to the official website, has over 5 million users. This mod adds a block into MC that, when broken, can create a random outcome. These can range from spawning valuable things like enchanted tools to useless things to harmful things like an unavoidable anvil trap.
Inventory Pets
Created by Purplicious_Cow_ in May 2015, with over 30 million downloads. Inventory pets are little, living, animated pets that live in the player's inventory, and each of the 69 pets has positive effects, drops, and much more.
Mod Packs
These are collections of mods combined into one pack. They are also usually optimized to work together to reduce lag seamlessly. Also, if you'd like to download any of them, click the mod pack's name.
RlCraft
A mod pack made up of 185 total mods to create an extremely challenging fantasy world. Players will encounter dragons, castles, new crafting systems, and more with this mod pack. It also makes even the mechanics of MC more complicated, like needing to get Flint to be able to get wood eventually, instead of being able to punch it like in vanilla MC. Shivaxi created it in January 2018, and it has around 17 million downloads.
Aether
One of the oldest and most iconic of the mods mentioned, it was released in July 2011 and has nearly 15 million downloads. Although Forge considers this a mod, it adds so much to the game that it creates a new experience so, its a mod pack. The Aether is a new dimension in the clouds, complete with its blocks, mobs, items, biomes, and more. To get there, the player has to build a nether portal made of glowstone instead of obsidian and filled with water instead of fire. This new dimension is only available by downloading the mod pack, but a few years back, many people thought it was in vanilla MC, even building Aether portals without the mod pack. Mostly because of the confusion between the nether update at the time and one of the mod's creators, kingbdogz, got hired at Mojang.
Pixelmon
Created by the Pixelmon Team and released in 2013. The mod pack adds Pokemon into MC, with everything the Pokemon games have included, like battling, the Pokemon themself (only generation eight), battles, and lots more. There is a base Pixelmon mod if you want to play Pokemon in MC, but the mod pack adds some quality-of-life things like a minimap, a soundtrack, more biomes, and more. Both are available to download on Forge.
Popular Public Servers from 2016 to today
A public server is a MC that anyone with a copy of the game and an internet connection can join unless the server goes down. Unfortunately, many public servers can only be played on either Bedrock or Java edition of the game. There's an endless amount of public Minecraft servers that millions of people play on everyday. Many of them fall under at least of these categories.
Prison , where players have to mine and sell ores to make their way out of the prison slowly, like the purple prison. Survival is the survival mode of MC but online and with the threat of other players stealing or destroying your stuff. Creative, where players are in creative mode, are given a certain sized plot of land that varies from server to server and let loose to create whatever they can fit in their square. Also, everyone's plots are protected, so players can't destroy other players' builds. Minigame servers are made of several smaller games, usually played in short bursts, sometimes including one or more of the previous types. Skyblock is where the player is given their island away from all other players; they are only given some dirt blocks to start and have to make a cobblestone generator and a farm to expand their island and survive from the materials in the chest. Anarchy servers, like tbt2, are survival servers, but without any rules. Anything goes; cheating, stealing, and destroying are parts of the experience. Some servers will sometimes include multiple of these, like Hypixel, with skyblock and minigames. Modded severs usually fall under at least one of the above categories and have modded elements to enhance the gameplay in one way or another. Due to limitation on Bedrock, modded servers are far more common, popular, and easier to come by the type you may have in mind on Java.
